Around the World in a Thousand Years is a musical journey through the last ten centuries, showcasing different parts of history such as the Black Death, the legend of Robin Hood, Henry VIII's six wives and Captain Cook's voyages around the world. This is the show to bring Broadway into your school and, according to The Times Ed, '… your audience will go away delighted'.
In Act 1, soldiers from the Bayeux Tapestry come alive at night; 11th century Britain counts and checks with the ‘Doomsday Crew’; the story of Thomas a Becket chills spines in Canterbury Cathedral; King John and the Barons do battle over the signing of the Magna Carta; the Black Death rocks Europe (literally); the elusive Robin Hood strikes a financial balance in Sherwood Forest; Geoffrey Chaucer researches his next book in the number ‘Poverty, Penitence, Prayer’ and Joan of Arc is on trial for witchcraft. In Act 2, life with the king according to each of the six queens of Henry VIII makes a Tudor tale to remember; Guy Fawkes, the not-so-successful espionage agent has a little trouble with gunpowder and his backing singers, The Sparklers; Captain Cook’s around the world voyages make his mum miss him; the Industrial Revolution and the Victorian Age of science, steam and speed teach us plenty about men, machines and achievement; the country girls show those city boys a thing or two when evacuees of World War II leave London for the rural life and to the technological developments of the 20th century lead us into a rousing finale.

| Cast List | This show needs a minimum cast of 30. Many more can be accommodated in ensembles. There are plenty of small parts for children to double-up – perhaps a one-liner in the 14th century and a walk-on with a placard in the 19th! There’s a cast list in the book for each ‘century episode’ of this modular musical. Modules can be omitted without causing a problem to the structure of the show and you are free to add your own material if you wish to give it a local flavour, pinpoint a particular piece of history your class have covered etc. |
