Improvised Fairytales: Aladdin

Rub the spout and hold onto your bath mat—things are about to get "sandy!"

In this hilarious third installment of the Twisted Plays series, the classic "Aladdin" story gets a budget-conscious, meta-comedic makeover. To stay safely out of reach of "House of Mouse" lawyers, the Stage Manager rebrands the entire production: the kingdom is now "A Very Sandy Place," the powerful genie is a grumpy teen in a blue tracksuit called "The Wish-Granter," and the iconic magic lamp has been replaced by a beige ceramic gravy boat.

Your audience will roar as Aladdin (dressed in a window-curtain cape and a paper crown) attempts to woo a unimpressed Princess by taking her for a ride on a "Magic Carpet" that is clearly a damp bath mat dragged across the floor by the exhausted Stage Crew. The comedy peaks when the Villain finally achieves his dream of ultimate power, only to realize that "The Boss" of a Sandy Place is actually a Crossing Guard equipped with a neon vest and a very loud whistle.

Key Features:

  • Physical Comedy Gold: From the "stationary flight" on a bath mat to a "cave" made of an itchy moving blanket, the physical gags are easy to stage and high-impact.

  • Meta-Theater Humor: The script plays with the "struggling drama club" trope, featuring fourth-wall breaks, prop mishaps, and copyright-paranoia.

  • Flexible & Inclusive Casting: Roles for 11+ students, with plenty of room for an active (and funny) Stage Crew.

  • Improv-Friendly: The "play-within-a-play" structure allows students to lean into mistakes and react to the audience in real-time.

Cast List

The play uses 10+ actors/students:

  • Stage Manager: The stressed-out director who provides the "magic" (and the sound effects).
  • Mr. Tock: The reliable narrator who tries to keep the story classy despite the low budget.
  • Aladdin: A "Prince" in a window-curtain cape.
  • The Wish-Granter: A grumpy student in a blue tracksuit who is "over it."
  • The Villain: Dramatic, evil, and eventually obsessed with traffic safety.
  • The Princess: Tired of being sandy; unimpressed by bath mats.
  • The Sultan: Wears a lawn chair "throne" with pride.
  • Stage Crew (2-3 Members): The literal "engine" of the magic carpet and the architects of the itchy blanket cave.

An ensemble of additional stage managers and stage crew could fill out the play.
